Please check this list before asking on the mailing lists. If you think your question is freqeuently asked, write it here and somebody might answer it.

How do I check a po file?

On the command line, use msgmft, for example, to check the gnome file evolution.HEAD.ar.po:

msgmft -cv -o /dev/null evolution.HEAD.ar.po

Usually, all GUI programs like poeditor and KBabel do that for you, But it's worth checking again. There is also poc, a script written by Djihed to check and commit files to arabeyes cvs with a suitable commit message. Get poc here.

How can I download all po files from Gnome's statistics website?

Use wget, a handly command line utility:

wget -r -N -l 1 --accept *ar.po http://l10n-status.gnome.org/HEAD/PO/

How can I build a compendium of all po files that I have?

On the command line, issue: msgcat -o GNOME-19Jul06-Arabic.compendium *ar.po

How can I get a gpg signature?

CVS

How do I request a CVS account?

Read the CVS access page.

Do I have to learn CVS to contribute to projects on Arabeyes?

A good guess would be... yes. Learning something new is not going to hurt you.

I want to contribute to Arabization but don't want to join Arabeyes. What can I do?

There is nothing that should stop you from contributing to Arabization, neither will your effort go without being credited for it. How you go about doing so depends on the maintainer of a project wants to deal with it. You will have to email the maintainer of the project you wish to contribute to and coordinate with him/her.

Does this include translation as well?

Yes, it is primarily for translation related projects. Usually maintainers of development projects are not so ready to hand out direct access to their projects, so you will have to submit patches on bugzilla.

Why can't I contribute directly to the original source of a translation project? I want nothing to do with Arabeyes!

Sorry you feel that way, but it's not that simple. Arabeyes already has translators and people working on this project you want to contribute to, which means, others, before you, already invested time and energy on it. If you do that, the maintainer of the project will not be able to synchronize our repository with that of the project you want to work with directly. That is why translation projects have the concept of language teams -- in order to have a person to coordinate between the different parties. If you bypass this team coordinator, you will break the harmony and make everyone's life difficult.

I have nothing against the coordinator, I just don't like Arabeyes. I still want to contribute to Arabization though, what can I do?

Arabeyes is not in charge of every Arabization project under the sun. There are plenty of projects that Arabeyes is not already undertaking. Pick one of those. However, if it is something that Arabeyes is already working on it, expect to either work with Arabeyes or not working on the project at all. Of course if it is such a bad situation that it is so important to you, the option of forking is always there.

Some of the standards issued by ["QAC"] are braindead, do I have to follow them?

Yes, as long as the project is maintained by Arabeyes you will have to. If the project is not, we would hope that you do. If you don't like something, you can always voice your opinion and if enough people agree with you, chances are, it will change.

I am a commercial entity and would like to pay people to work on projects that Arabeyes maintains, what do I do?

That is up to you. You can assign a liaison from your organization to establish official and formal contact with Arabeyes, or you can simply have your paid staff contribute just like any other member would. The only difference is, creating a formal line of communication may result in a higher-level understanding and collaboration with Arabeyes as a project.

Why can't I post to the mailing-lists? It says my email is held because I'm not a member!

That is correct. Due to the huge amount of spam we receive, we had to make the lists subscriber-only. In other words, you will have to subscribe to a list in order to post to it.

Are the lists censored?

NO. We don't do this type of thing.

So I can post whatever I want?

Yes, you can. Keep in mind though, all posts are archived and made publically available. So, you might not want to post something that you don't want people to remember you with.

Why are people telling me to not use HTML in my emails, it looks pretty to me!?

And it looks ugly for some other people. No one can argue that plain text is normal though. Please do be considerate to others and use plain-text only. Eventually, we will block all HTML emails automatically.
