It is useful to recognize that the terms serif and sans (being an abbreviation of sans-serif ) are only really applicable in Western typography. Non-Western script traditions do not have a native concept of “serifs.” It would be more accurate in a global typographical context to replace the word serif with modulated, and the word sans with unmodulated. Modulation refers to changes in the stroke width of an imaginary pen used to draw a glyph. Serif fonts are thus a subset, and specifically the Western subset, of a larger global set of all modulated fonts, while sans-serif fonts are the Western subset of a larger global set of all visually unmodulated fonts. I am not sure whether such a change in the accepted terminology, regardless of the inadequacy of the accepted terminology, will ever occur.
