• Sorry for using English but I'm missing Arabic terms to express it clearly. Bandwidth originally refers to the width of a "band" of frequencies. Conventionally, it actually refers to the band of frequecies naturally avalable on a medium (copper, fiber, ..) to carry a signal. Often, the frequency of the signal one's wishes to transmit doesn't coincide with this range, so modulation is used : the signal is actually convoluted (sort of multiplied..) with a "carrier", another signal who's central frequency is in the middle of the Bandwidth. Thus losses are minimized. On the other side, once the carrier is done giving the info-signal a ride, filters de-modulate it and we've operated the transmission in medium's favorite range of frequencies (cheating isn't it ?:-)..

So basically, Bandwith is just what it is : a range of frequecies.. but conventionally, in relation with a medium, it means : the range of frequencies were trasmission losses are workable.. (telecom-aware people reading this, pardon my shortcuts !)-- وصفي جوّاد 5 أوت 2007
