whats the difference between using Quit and Exit? any significant difference in meaning when used in interfaces, i see non, and thus i suggest they are both translated to "خروج" or "إنهاء"?--Maysara.abdulhaq 02:37, 14 December 2006 (PST)
- I think, but not sure, some times "exit" means closing the interface while the program still working in the background (you can access it via an icon in the tray for example), while quit stops the program at all. --Hosny 10:44, 14 December 2006 (PST)
I haven't seen it used this way myself, even for menus popping up from icons in the tray. On computers, I see it vary by platform - looking around the desktops in my office, Mac, Gnome, and KDE generally use Quit, where Windows uses Exit. OpenOffice uses Exit, even on Mac and Linux, while Mozilla products tend to follow the platform. In general parlance, Quit has a mild final quality, a vague hint of "I've had enough for today!", where Exit is more neutral. In this sense, it might make sense to use "إنهاء" for Quit and "خروج" for Exit, if I understand the Arabic correctly. However, their usage does appear to be interchangable or a "cultural" preference on menus. --Lupestro 19:20, 15 December 2006 (PST)
- i suppose this means that it could happen that if we translate from gb_en to arabic and from en_us to arabic that we will get 2 diffrent translations ... i do agree with the possible diffrence in meaning suggested above, but in that case, i suggest that this fine difference should be made clear and each word should be used in that context, ie, if we have a program that uses "exit" to exit completely, and we have initially translated it to خروج، it should be later changed to إنهاء, and vice versa. should this be considered a l10n guideline note?--Maysara.abdulhaq 19:42, 15 December 2006 (PST)
- I think Maysara's approach is fair enough and we can go with it. --Hosny 05:07, 16 December 2006 (PST)
- To clarify, when I said "cultural" preference, I meant system culture, not national culture, so I don't think there will be a problem with gb_en, for instance. Also, I don't see the shade of difference in meaning between Quit and Exit as the words are used in conversation reflected in how they are used on program menus. Both are used as synonyms for exiting completely from a program. I didn't intend to mislead anyone ... --Lupestro 04:54, 17 December 2006 (PST)
