Arabeyes applies to GSoC

Arabeyes is pleased to announce that it intends to participate, for the first time, in Google's Summer-of-Code (GSoC) program. Arabeyes submitted its application in hopes of attaining permission to become a 'Mentoring Organization'. Google will look over our application and suggested projects/tasks to see if we fit their criteria after which "students" should be able to apply (Note: we were rather unfortunately not picked).

We'd like to thank Djihed Afifi for taking the initiative to make this happen as well as all those that participated and helped on Arabeyes' various mailing-lists. For further discussions please use the 'general' or 'developer' mailing-lists.

Arabic Gnome-2.16 Translation Complete

Arabic Firefox 2.0 Available

Arabeyes' server upgraded

Arabeyes.org's server underwent a major software maintenance cycle (Sept 14 - Sept 18). All software packages and tools were updated as was its kernel (a number of complications arose which were ultimately addressed - special thanks to Mohammed.Trojette, Mohammed.Sameer and of course Anmar.Oueja). Various tools will continue to be worked on until they are improved and streamlined for better user and administration experiences. If you have issues and/or are interested in such things, you are highly encouraged to subscribe to the admin mailing-list.

Arabeyes.org took a major evolutionary step on July 29, 2001 when it mutated to its current final form. We, the volunteers, workers, Arabic language lovers and linux enthusiasts, would all like to invite you to celebrate this momentous occasion.

This year's theme is "Help us proceed in the right direction". We are hoping to hear from all our past volunteers as well as new recruits; we are anticipating some much needed and sought after feedback on how arabeyes as a project should move forward in order to further attain results. Our collective work is far from complete and as such we need to have a meeting of the minds to better organize our next steps.

Arabeyes attends LSM 2005

Arabeyes was cordially invited to the Libre Software Meeting (LSM) 2005 conference held July 5th through July 9th in Dijon, France. Our community had the great honor to have had Mr. Youcef Rabah Rahal attend the meeting and represent Arabeyes at the event. Youcef was asked to participate in various internationalization (i18n) topics and ultimately made three full presentations; he has kindly mailed-in various reports on the event and its proceeding.

Core Management Team Changes

Arabeyes.org is pleased to announce the addition of two (yes two) new 'core' members to its management team. The two, in no particular order, are Samy Al-Bahra and Mohammed Sameer. They both join with an extensive history of development, project management and Open Source doctrine. The addition was prompted by Mohammed Elzubeir's recent resignation, a founder and a long time manager of the project, due to some pressing "life" issues and time constraints.

We thank Mohammed Elzubeir for his support and involvement over the years (and continue to expect it :-) for he was instrumental in the existence and survival of Arabeyes then and now and we welcome aboard our two new associates for a great deal is expected of them from the entire community.

Please join us in welcoming Samy and Mohammed to 'core'.

Arabeyes attends AsiaSource

Arabeyes was humbly treated to an all-expenses paid invitation to attend AsiaSource I which was held in Bangalore India between January 28 through February 4th. Mr. Mohammed Sameer graciously took the honors to represent Arabeyes and our community at the event to further along our collective agendas, to promote FOSS and to raise awareness about the Arabic language's needs and concerns. ACE - Q4.2004 Installment

Arabeyes is proud to publish its fourth quarter (Q4) 2004 ACE (Arabization Contributor and Evangelist) article featuring Arafat Medini.

Do please read the interview (available in both English and Arabic) in its entirety in hopes of better grasping how single individuals can make such a profound dent in the Arabization effort. Mr. Medini, an avid translator, was a prominent force in setting a once unthinkable precedence by reaching 100% translation status on Gnome in a remarkably short period of time. Arafat's efforts have clearly shown that where there is a will and a burning urge to get things done time and effort will not be in short supply and that even a single person can and does make a huge difference. Arafat, who has been jokingly credited with MadSpeak(tm), has never shied from speaking his mind and standing up to what he believes is the right direction on a myriad of topics. Arabeyes.org and its members salute and thank you for your continued hard work and commitment !!

Arabeyes' First Award

Arabeyes has been named 'Best Free/Open Project' (Meilleur Projet Libre) on December 18 as part of its participation at the "Casablanca GNU/Linux Days" held in Morocco. The award presented by Richard Stallman (RMS), founder of the Free Software Foundation and the GNU Project, was accorded to Abdulaziz Al-Arfaj as part of Arabeyes' presence at the event. This is a great honor which Arabeyes has been bestowed upon and we thank all those involved and congratulate all of Arabeyes' volunteers for this award is in all of YOUR names.
